Ak’Tenamit’s boarding school for middle and high school students has provided educational opportunities for mayan youth, in the eastern rainforest of Guatemala, since 1992. Focusing on a hands-on, vocational education in either Sustainable Tourism or Rural Community Development Ak’Tenamit has developed an educational program that has helped create change in the communities it serves.
Asociacion Ak’Tenamit and The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund work to provide inidigenous mayan youth with the education and practical experience needed to graduate with the necessary skills to obtain gainful employment.
Ak’Tenamit has developed it’s own curriculum based on the needs of the students and focused to jobs available in the area. It’s innovative program has received national recognition and Ak’Tenamit was one of 10 finalists in the WISE.
AK’Tenamit is managed by the clients it serves. It has a 100% indigenous board and has representatives from all the surrounding villages it serves.
Ak’Tenamit provides 3000 hours of hands-on, real life work experience in addition to class time!
Students acquire hands on experience at the school’s 3 restaurants, local hotels, handicraft shops, a diversity of NGO’s (non-gobernmental organizations), public agencies, and village organizations.
Our intensive internship program places our seniors in real life jobs for the last 3 months of school. Several of these have turned into full time jobs when they graduated. Meet Our Students & Interns
