She comes from a large family; has 3 sisters and 2 brothers. It takes Yolanda 15 hours by bus and boat to get to Ak’Tenamit’s boarding school and like all boarding students, Yolanda is in school 3 months and then goes home for a 2 week vacation. While at home, students are assigned different projects, for example developing a community or family vegetable garden which is then approved and signed off by the village mayor.
Being a girl, it was much harder for her parents to allow her to go off to school. This has been a hard barrier to break, but AK’Tenamit has made much progress and this year has a total of 161 girls, almost 40% of the total student body.
